18Th century. Central Russia measurements: 53,5 x 46,5 x 3 cm technique; material: board, gesso, tempera, drying oil. description: this monumental and spiritually intense image of Jesus Christ is painted by a master iconographer in a classical, strict and medieval manner. This type of depiction represents The Christ shoulders-up, so that the face of Jesus occupies most of the painting area. Together with a large tsars size it makes a very strong emotional influence over a spectator. This icon was a central icon of a home church. In this case we see a special type of the icon of Jesus Christ, with a beard of a triangular shape (coming out of a broad end to one or two narrow ends); it was known in Byzantine sources, however, only on a Russian iconographic ground it became organized as an independent iconographic type, and got a title of Savior the wet beard (rus. Spas mokraya brada). In 2009 the original painting was cleaned from the later paintings of the 19th century; the fragments of the latter are left on the top and left border areas of the icon. Provenance: the icon served as the main icon of a home church.
